2 Content Assets For Your Career Journey

Content Marketing in Your Career is a Worthwhile Commitment

Are you planning your retirement party in the next three months? If not, you are what I call a career-seeker. It doesn’t matter if you have a great job. I urge you to think long term about where you want your career journey to go. To that end, I urge you to commit to at least two content assets to anchor your career journey.

Content assets are similar to monetary assets in a portfolio. Your content assets can provide leverage, differentiation and create new opportunities in your career. Your content assets can accelerate your career. But, don’t expect it to happen by itself. You must plan your content assets.

Content Marketing

Content marketing is what businesses do to engage their target audience. The premise is simple. In the digital age, buyers are much more likely to trust and ultimately buy from a brand after consuming relevant, trust-building content over a period of time. Such content can be online or offline or both. Think about webinars you attend, videos you watch, books, ebooks and white papers you read. These content assets serve brands well in developing trust, and creating loyal customers.

Content marketing in your career is essentially the same principle.  That’s why I want you to consider not just one, but at least two content assets.

Your Name Dot Com

A website in your name gives you a powerful digital asset to create content that brands you. Identify the topics that support your career goals and develop content on your website that positions you as an authority on the topic(s).  A website is also a terrific place to have a diversity of content about you including video and photos. Your website allows others to gain insight into your professional credentials with a human touch. Photos and videos support that. Your website should also have a blog…

Career Blogging is Requisite

Your website contains static content that you don’t necessarily update very often. However, a blog is your digital magazine with frequently updated content. A blog that covers a topic or theme in your industry is dynamic and a powerful branding tool in your career. A blog is where you can express your professional and personal views on topics in your career. Your blog can be baked into your website. For example, when you visit my website, I offer static content about my speaking, training products and my book, plus I have a dedicated blog built into the website. It’s as simple as yourname.com/blog.

There are many other content assets you can consider. If you loathe writing, consider a podcast show or a video blog where you shoot video and publish it on your website. Both of these forms of content can be very productive for your personal brand, if you have the passion and know-how to manage audio or video content.

The digital age affords each of us the opportunity to build our personal brand through a content strategy. Start with your goals and develop a content strategy that aligns with them. It’s not easy because it takes commitment. Consider that anything worth doing requires commitment and effort. Developing content assets for an A+ career journey is one of those commitments worth doing.

I’m speaking on content marketing in your career at Content Marketing World in September. Put it on your calendar!
